The Scientific Research Institute of Physical-Chemical Medicine (SRI PCM) was founded in 1981 within the N.I. In 1984 it separated from the 2nd MSMI and became the autonomous SRI PCM under the authority of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR. Prof. Yu.M. Lopuknin was appointed to the position of Emeritus Director. Yu.M. Lopukhin is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Full Member of the RAMS, Honored Scientist of Russia, a recipient of the USSR State Prize, the RSFSR State Prize and the Russian Federation Government Award.
The highlights of our history include the laying down of the foundation of efferent medicine, the development of theoretical and practical aspects of atherosclerosis and psoriasis, the carrying out, for the first time in Russia, of research studies of primary immunodeficiencies, the development of Tactivin, the first domestic immunomodulatory drug derived from thymus, the pioneering in studies on molecular fluorescent probes, the investigation of the role of oxidative stress, and others.

The institute advances permanently. In the beginning of 1990s, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (the Head: Prof. V.M. Govorun, Corresponding Member of the RAMS) was organized, on the basis of the Laboratory of Cell Cultures. At present, it is the powerful, well-equipped department which is concerned with problems of genetics, genomics, proteomics, genetic engineering, cell biology, and bioinformatics.
